Today was a double-header, entertainment wise.
It didn't start out that way, mind you. The original plan was just to join James and Ed for lunch then see R|E|N|T (touring show with the original actors reprising the rolls of Mark and Roger) with them then possibly have dinner with James after the show.
Over lunch James and Ed were talking about the Seattle Men's Chorus show that Ed was going to perform in this evening. It got me curious and the description of some of the songs piqued my interest so I decided to join James in the audience for that as well.
R|E|N|T was fundamentally amazing. This production was as good as the first touring show I saw (which also had some original cast members). No, Neal wasn't in this production (and I don't remember if he was in the one I saw in San Diego either) but the two who were were fantastic. The touring show I saw last time it was in Seattle was pale and disappointing even on its own. Compared to this production it was downright unpalatable. The show is only in town a little longer but if you get a chance to see it I strongly recommend it.
What can I saw about the SMC production? There were some great songs (and some really hot guys singing them :). I discovered that I don't like some forms of acapella singing though. They had a guest act - m-pact - that I wasn't too fond of. It's a style of music I've never really enjoyed. However, the SMC itself was also technically acapella since they were singing without accompanying music and I really enjoyed their sound. Did I mention there were some really attractive guys on stage, too? (But then with 250 or so people up there, the odds were good I'd find at least one guy with long hair and a nice smile. :) While I was there I also picked up both of the Captain Smartypants CDs. I'm looking forward to listening to them ... tomorrow.
One amusing note from the evening show. James had purchased his ticket long in advance. Obviously I was buying mine at the door. We asked if I could be seated near James and the guy selling the tickets said that the seat next to James was available - it had just been turned in. As a result I was 5 seats from the end in the 3rd row. Nice.
It was a good but long day. Now, to sleep.
